John Maroney was appointed as the CEO of the SMSF Association in May 2017 and is thrilled to have the opportunity to boost the Association’s reputation as the peak body in the SMSF Sector and its representation of more than one million SMSF trustees. Since his appointment, John has continued the Association’s efforts to improve the quality of advisors, the knowledge of trustees and the credibility and health of a vibrant SMSF community. John has developed strong connections with the SMSF sector’s regulators, ATO, ASIC & FASEA, provided substantial input into official inquiries, Producivity Commission, Franking Credits & Royal Commission, and represented the sector extensively to the Government and media. John’s experience includes extensive senior management, Board and consulting roles in superannuation, insurance, Australian and international financial regulation, actuarial and risk management plus managing professional and industry associations. He has been employed by large and small employers and consultants, within the private and public sectors, within Australia and internationally and he also was self-employed for several years while he developed a successful consulting firm. Key roles include CEO of the Actuaries Institute, Australian Government Actuary and Head of Capital and Solvency at the International Association of Insurance Supervisors, which is hosted by the Bank for International Settlements in Basel, Switzerland.
Stephen is the Chief Executive Officer of FASEA. Stephen has worked in financial services regulation for over three decades, most recently as a general manager within the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA). Stephen was Chair of APRA’s Superannuation Industry Group. He has previously worked with the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors, the Victorian Financial Institutions Commission and KPMG. Stephen holds a Bachelor of Economics from Monash University and is a member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand.

Liam Shorte is an SMSF Specialist Advisor™ and Financial Planner and with his firm Verante Financial Planning. He provides strategic advice on superannuation, retirement, estate planning, investment and tax strategies with clients and their families. He enjoys working with Self Managed Super Funds and Family Trusts but offers a holistic financial advice service, canvasing a wide range of solutions for his clients. He writes a blog, The SMSF Coach, to help break down the strategies and industry jargon in to plain English for SMSF Trustees so they can take back control of their wealth. Liam advises clients via Sydney offices in Castle Hill & Windsor and throughout NSW, QLD and Victoria on regular client trips. With 27 years’ experience in Financial Services, Liam has worked in Ireland, UK and the Middle East before moving to Australia in 2001. His experience and knowledge comes from working in banking, insurance, accounting and financial planning firms before starting his own business in 2006. He writes for a number of industry and public websites and magazines and presents at various seminars and conferences on SMSF, Retirement and planning for Incapacity. Liam has been the Chair of the SMSF Association NSW Local Community since 2015 and is currently a Member of the Magnitude Advisory Committee. In Fe bruary 2018, Liam proudly received the CEO’s Award at the SMSF Association National Conference. Liam has a Bachelor of Business majoring in Accounting & Economics, Advanced Diploma Financial Services (Financial Planning), ASX Accredited Listed Products Adviser (ALPA) and is an SMSF Specialist Advisor™.With his day to day interaction with trustees and other SMSF Association members while running his advice business, Liam brings the practitioners perspective and insights to the SMSF Association Board
Brett specialises in all aspects of superannuation compliance including retirement savings accounts, large retail superannuation funds and more specifically Self Managed Superannuation Funds. His expertise includes superannuation strategies to achieve the best outcome for the client and reviewing investment structures to ensure legislative compliance.
Brett joined Vincents in 2009 as the manager of Superannuation Consulting and became appointed a director of the team in 2011. He has over eighteen years experience working in taxation and superannuation for several accounting firms, including one of Queensland’s largest superannuation consultancy firms, which well places him to advise in all areas of superannuation compliance.
