Vale the Hon Sir Anthony Mason

The SMSF Association today paid tribute to the late Sir Anthony Mason, Australia’s ninth Chief Justice and one of the country’s most influential judicial figures, following his passing at the age of 100.

Sir Anthony played an integral role in the SMSF Association, serving as its inaugural Patron from 2007 to 2017. He accepted this role with characteristic generosity, bringing a deep and enduring commitment to advancing ethical and professional standards across Australia.

Widely respected as a distinguished community leader, Sir Anthony was a highly regarded voice on social justice, leadership and ethics. His contribution to the SMSF Association extended well beyond patronage; he led by example, helping to shape professional standards, strengthen institutional integrity, and reinforce the importance of ethical conduct and public trust.

SMSF Association CEO Peter Burgess said, “Sir Anthony’s wisdom, integrity and unwavering commitment to ethical leadership set a benchmark for all who serve in positions of responsibility and have helped shape the Association into what it is today.”

Former SMSF Association CEO Andrea Slattery said, “Through his work with the SMSF Association, the broader profession and the Australian community were profoundly fortunate to benefit from his guidance,” she said.

“His perspective was generous, his integrity absolute. We stand on the shoulders of a giant and will remain enduring beneficiaries of his legacy,” Ms Slattery said.

The SMSF Association extends its deepest condolences to Sir Anthony’s family, friends and colleagues, and acknowledges his extraordinary contribution to Australia’s legal history.
