Associate Membership

Associate membership is designed to support SMSF practitioners providing professional advice, products and/or services to the retail and/or wholesale SMSF sector.
You must have at least one of the following minimum eligibility requirements to apply for Associate Membership: - A relevant tertiary qualification at a minimum Diploma level; OR
- An existing registration as a tax agent or tax (financial) adviser with the Tax Practitioners Board; OR
- Voting rights with an existing recognised tax agent association or recognised tax (financial) adviser association.

Associate Membership is designed to support SMSF practitioners providing professional advice, products and/or services to the retail and/or wholesale SMSF sector, and is the best option to support those working with SMSFs and requiring ongoing professional development.
While it doesn’t have all the inclusions of Associate Membership, such as access to the Resource Library and Technical Research Service, if you are just starting out in your career, Affiliate Membership ensures you stay informed on the latest developments in the SMSF sector while being part of our valued SMSF community.
Affiliate Membership is open to all professionals working with SMSFs.
To be eligible for Associate Membership, you must have at least one of the following minimum eligibility requirements to apply:
- A relevant tertiary qualification at a minimum Diploma level; OR
- An existing registration as a tax agent or tax (financial) adviser with the Tax Practitioners Board; OR
- Voting rights with an existing recognised tax agent association or recognised tax (financial) adviser association.
All members of the SMSF Association are required to comply with the SMSF Association Code of Professional Conduct and Disciplinary Procedures. This details the expected minimum acceptable professional standards applicable to all SMSF Association members.
Associate, Specialist and Fellow Members also have annual CPD requirements to meet, as per the Association’s CPD Policy.
The current annual memberships fees are $680/year for Associate Membership, and $320/year for Affiliate Membership for those looking to join the association. For members who have earned an SMSF Specialist Accreditation, Specialist or Fellow annual membership is $820. Retired membership fees are $145/year.

Pro rata rates may apply for the first year of membership for members who join partway through the membership year.
New members can save $100 off their first year’s fees when they join as an Associate Member via our Mates Rates referral program.
SMSF Association Associate, Specialist and Fellow members may apply to the SMSF Association for a Leave of Absence.
A Leave of Absence will only be granted if the Association is satisfied that you have a reasonable basis for requesting Leave of Absence.
If a Leave of Absence is granted, Members will pay a 50% discounted membership fee for the period of the approved absence.
Specialist Members cannot represent themselves as an SMSF Specialist Advisor™ or SMSF Specialist Auditor™ during the period of absence. Depending on the length of absence, Specialist Members may be required to re-sit and pass the relevant Specialist exam to reactivate full Specialist Membership at the end of the Leave of Absence.
Membership renewals are due on 31 March each year, with the membership year running 1 April to 31 March.
The SMSF Association offers a Retired Membership option. This is open SMSF Association Fellow, Specialist and Associate Members who are aged 55 or over, and have ceased gainful employment within the financial services sector, SMSF sector or similar on a permanent basis. It is ideal for members entering retirement but still wishing to remain involved and stay up to date with the SMSF sector.
