Following several years of consultation and legislative refinement, Division 296 introduces an additional layer of tax for individuals with higher superannuation balances.
While Division 296 tax is often described as a tax on large superannuation balances, that description only tells part of the story. That is, the tax is not imposed directly on superannuation balances themselves, nor is it a tax paid by a superannuation fund.
