The ATO’s latest quarterly SMSF statistics released today show continued growth in the sector, with 12,264 new SMSFs established during the June 2026 quarter and total membership increasing to more than 1.24 million Australians. The figures confirm a record year for the sector, with more than 50,000 new SMSFs established during 2025-26.
The figures reinforce the continued appeal of self-managed superannuation funds among Australians seeking greater control over their retirement savings.
The June quarter data also provides valuable insight into the profile of Australians choosing to establish an SMSF. People aged 35–44 represented the largest cohort of new members, accounting for 39.1% of new entrants, while almost six in 10 new members were aged between 35 and 49.
SMSF Association CEO, Peter Burgess said, “The record number of new SMSFs reflects a growing cohort of Australians taking an active interest in their retirement savings and wanting greater engagement with their long-term financial future.
“Attitudes towards superannuation are shifting rapidly, with three consecutive years of near-record SMSF growth providing clear evidence of this change.
“This trend should come as little surprise. For anyone under 50 in the workforce, compulsory superannuation has been a constant throughout their working life. With the Superannuation Guarantee now at 12 per cent, retirement savings are building more quickly, and members are taking a greater interest in how those savings are invested and managed. While super remains preserved for retirement, there is a growing desire for greater choice, control and transparency.
“For many, superannuation is no longer something that sits in the background but is now an important part of building and managing their overall wealth. The age and income profile of new entrants suggests SMSFs continue to attract engaged Australians with the financial capacity and motivation to actively manage their retirement outcomes.
“While SMSFs are not suitable for everyone, the continued growth of the sector demonstrates that many consumers value having greater control, transparency, and choice and are seeking a retirement solution that aligns with their particular needs and objectives.
“Record SMSF establishments shows the SMSF sector has risen to this challenge and is heeding the changing needs of its members.”
