The SMSF Association has marked the fourth year of its dedicated SMSF Audit Day, recognising the increasingly important role auditors play in providing independent oversight and assurance within the SMSF sector.
Held virtually on Tuesday, Audit Day 2026 provided a full day of practical education and professional development, bringing together SMSF Specialist Auditors and leading industry experts to examine the regulatory, technical and governance issues shaping the future of SMSF auditing.
This year’s program explored the changing audit landscape, and the risks auditors need to be prepared for, with sessions including regulatory reform, in-specie contributions, digital assets, benefit payments, incapacity and forensic auditing.
SMSF Association CEO Peter Burgess said SMSF Audit Day 2026 highlighted the important contribution of SMSF auditors, and the Association’s commitment to providing them with the knowledge, resources and connections they need to thrive.
“SMSF auditors are an essential part of the broader superannuation ecosystem. Their independence, technical expertise and professional judgement provide an important layer of assurance for SMSF members and contribute to confidence in the integrity of the system.
“We are proud to dedicate this event each year acknowledging the contribution auditors make to the SMSF sector and providing them with an opportunity to connect, learn and share knowledge with leading experts. As the SMSF environment becomes increasingly complex and the regulatory landscape continues to evolve, the role of auditors is more important than ever.
“Maintaining high standards of audit quality requires not only technical knowledge, but independence, professional judgement and a commitment to continuous learning.
“That is why providing auditors with high-quality education, practical insights and opportunities to connect with their peers and industry experts is a key priority for the Association. We want to ensure auditors have the knowledge and support they need to navigate an evolving profession, strengthen their expertise and continue delivering the high standards of audit quality the SMSF sector relies on.”
