SMSF Association National Conference set for 20-22 February

The SMSF Association National Conference will be held in Melbourne from 20-22 February 2019 at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre.

SMSF Association CEO John Maroney says the theme for next year’s National Conference is “strength” – highly appropriate in the wake of the challenges confronting the sector because of the ongoing superannuation reforms and the Royal Commission heightening public scrutiny of the financial services sector.

“At this critical time for our superannuation sector, we need to ‘strengthen’ our commitment to clients, to reliable, appropriate advice, technical standards, continuing education and ethical behaviour.

“Next year will again test our sector as the findings of the Royal Commission and the Productivity Commission report play out in the public arena, as well as the impact of the higher professional standards being required by the Financial Adviser Standards and Ethics Authority (FASEA).

“In this challenging environment for advisers, the Association has devised a National Conference program that will address each of these challenges, as well as a plethora of technical sessions on issues we understand are vitally important to our members.

“By focussing on the broader issues confronting the sector, as well as key technical issues, over more than 40 sessions and with more than 60 expert speakers (selected for their ability to deliver a compelling message and knowledge), we can continue to nurture the growth of the SMSF specialist and the professionalism that symbolises.

“As always, our goal is to give delegates every opportunity to expand their SMSF knowledge to help them meet their clients’ needs by enhancing their skill base to ensure their leadership position in the SMSF sector.”

Maroney says considering recent events the concurrent sessions take on extra importance at next year’s conference. “Issues that will be explored include how to improve the quality of advice in the wake of ASIC’s report, what reserves are acceptable for an SMSF and how to deal with reserves in an SMSF, and examining the rules for taxation on pension income, as well as what strategies can be used to maximise exempt current pension income (ECPI).”

On the entertainment front, there will be exciting social events to allow delegates to network to build their business opportunities and improve their profiles.

Bookings for the event are now open with a special early bird rate on offer for individuals and businesses.
