National Conference to throw spotlight on Royal Commission

The findings and recommendations of the Financial Services Royal Commission will go under the microscope at the SMSF Association 2019 National Conference being held at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre from 20 – 22 February.

SMSF Association CEO John Maroney says with the Royal Commission handing down its final report on 1 February, the timing is ideal to examine the impact it will have on financial advisers in a post-Royal Commission world.

“The Association’s National Conference will be the first major financial services event to analyse the report, giving our specialist advisers the opportunity to ask how it will affect their businesses and clients.”

The Association has enlisted the Chairman of Retirement Income at Challenger, Jeremy Cooper, and the Hon Bernie Ripoll, known as the father of financial services reform, to dissect the issues via an interview with The Australian’s Wealth Editor, James Kirby.

Maroney says no one is under any illusion that the Royal Commission will hold back from recommending sweeping changes, and that the financial services industry will need to respond promptly as politicians move to implement the recommendations in a febrile pre-election environment.

“Issues likely to be explored are possible changes to the AFSL model, the future of vertical integration, the possible impact on self-managed super funds (SMSFs), and the role of the regulators.

“When you consider Labor’s proposed changes to the SMSF sector if it achieves office at the next federal election, which is also a major topic at the conference, it all adds up to a compelling case for SMSF specialists to attend,” he says.

Registrations for the event are now open and the special early bird discount offer finishes on Friday 07 December 2018.
